Choose the right storage unit size

Choosing the right storage unit size is easier than you might think. A good starting point is to consider how many boxes, bags and items of furniture you’ll be storing, and whether they can be stacked. As a guide, most items can be safely stacked up to around 8-10ft high inside our units, which means you can often store more in a smaller space than expected.

We list all units in square feet (sq ft), but we also show square metres (sq m) for convenience. As a quick comparison, 10 sq ft is roughly the size of a large car boot, while 100 sq ft is similar to a single garage. You’ll find real-world examples next to each unit size below to help you visualise the space.

Personal Storage Sizes

If you are unsure what size you need, the most useful starting point is to think about how many rooms you are storing rather than trying to count every item. Most belongings can be stacked safely, so you can often fit more into a unit than you might expect.

Here is a guide to the most common personal storage sizes and what typically fits in each:

• 10 to 16 sq ft: small items and luggage

A compact unit suitable for a few boxes, suitcases, bedding, a small flat screen TV or a PC. Popular with students storing belongings between terms. For more on student storage sizes and options, visit our student storage guide.

• 25 sq ft: studio flat or bedsit

About the size of a small garden shed and our most popular home storage size. A 25 sq ft unit typically fits a single or foldable bed, a chair or dresser, small appliances, and a good number of boxes and plastic storage containers.

• 35 to 50 sq ft: one-bedroom flat

At 35 sq ft you can store a queen-sized mattress, medium furniture such as a dining table and chairs, and boxes. Step up to 50 sq ft and you can add a two-seater sofa, a small wardrobe, coffee tables and side tables alongside your packed boxes.

• 75 sq ft: two-bedroom home

Around the size of a Luton van, a 75 sq ft unit suits most two-bedroom homes. You can typically fit a mattress, bookcases, tables, dressers, a corner sofa and larger appliances alongside your boxes.

• 100 sq ft: two or three-bedroom home

The size of a single garage and one of our most popular sizes for house moves. A 100 sq ft unit comfortably holds large wardrobes, full sofa sets, white goods, a dining table and chairs, and everything else that comes with a family home.

• 125 to 150 sq ft: larger three or four-bedroom home

For larger homes, or if you are storing the contents of a garage or shed alongside your household furniture, a unit of 125 sq ft or more gives you the space to store everything without having to make difficult decisions about what goes in.

• 175 sq ft and above: four-bedroom home or large-scale storage

Units from 175 sq ft upwards are suited to larger family homes, or where a significant volume of furniture, white goods and boxes needs to be stored together. Our largest personal units go up to 500 sq ft, the equivalent of two large lorries.

Business Storage Sizes

• 100 sq ft - Approx. the size of a single garage.

  Ideal for storing large deliveries, seasonal stock, or bulk inventory. Suitable for online retailers, market traders, or tool & equipment storage for trade businesses.

• 125 sq ft - Slightly larger than a single garage.

  Useful for holding palletised stock, archived documents, or display materials. Great for businesses who need regular access throughout the week.

• 150 sq ft - Around the size of a large single garage / small workshop.

  Works well for stock rooms, event equipment, e-commerce fulfilment, or temporary office furniture during relocation or refurbishment.

• 200 sq ft - About the size of a double garage.

  Ideal for larger product lines, bulk warehouse overflow, or storage for multiple office equipment. Can comfortably hold large shelving unit for organised picking/packing.

• 250 sq ft - Large double-garage footprint.

  Great for growing retailers, trade contractors, or regional teams who need centralised stock. Plenty of space for pallets, rolling racks, or metered racking systems.
